Description

ELSA Ghent and UNYA Ghent are jointly organising the lecture "Ukraine and Russia: paths to peace" on 7 December 2023 at 19h. Two prominent speakers have been invited for this lecture. Tom Sauer is professor of International Politics at the University of Antwerp and Johan Verbeke is professor of Diplomacy at the University of Ghent and honorary ambassador.
Professor Tom Sauer misses a peace narrative - even in our media - regarding the war in Ukraine. He outlines three possible explanations as to why Putin did what he did. Based on this historical sketch and basic notions of international relations, he concludes that the West too has made mistakes, and that the only solution will therefore be to reach a compromise at the negotiating table. Time plays against Ukraine.
Professor Johan Verbeke will capitalise on Prof Sauer's story and highlight the diplomatic side of the war in particular: how do diplomacy and warfare intertwine, what bandwidth is currently available for negotiation, how do you get a negotiation on track... It will already be a fascinating debate.
After the lecture, there will be an opportunity to put questions to the speakers.
