Halal Bi Halal is a uniquely Indonesian tradition of communal forgiveness, reconciliation, and
renewal celebrated in the days following Eid al-Fitr (Idul Fitri). Originating as a social institution
in Indonesian Muslim communities, the practice has become a defining cultural event for the
Indonesian diaspora worldwide — a moment to strengthen bonds, reconnect with elders, and
carry forward shared values across generations. Perhimpunan Pelajar Indonesia (PPI) Gent
— the Indonesian Students' Association in Ghent, Belgium — organizes this gathering
annually to unite Indonesian students, researchers, professionals, and families living in and
around Ghent.
